It was a friend’s 40th birthday, and I thought throwing some adventure into the celebrations would be a good idea. The activity of choice was a 1.5 km zip-line experience.

The venue was Adventure Zone, just outside Cullinan. It was selected because it was close—a 60km drive from Centurion.
We drove via the N4 and took the R515 offramp. Then, we drove through Rayton and Cullinan, and about 18km outside, Cullinan was where all the fun and games were taking place.
Planning for this outing started about a month in advance. A few things needed to be considered, like costs and the challenges the zip-line presents.
For example, if you are afraid of heights, this is probably not the activity for you. At one point, the zip-line is about 75 meters high, and if you are a bit on the heavier side, the maximum allowed weight is 120kg.
This is not a problem though as they have a rather lovely reception area where you can have something to drink, take in the views and wait it out. The zip-line activity took just under two hours to complete.
If you don’t feel like waiting it out, the venue also has other activities on offer.
Muningi Gorge

The zip-line zig-zags over the gorge.
The gorge is a product of natural geological processes carved out over extended periods by water erosion. This has resulted in the dramatic rocky landscapes and river courses characterising the area.
In addition to zip-lining, other recreational activities in the area include hiking for different fitness levels, quad biking, abseiling, archery, and horse riding.
Beyond its recreational use, Muningi Gorge also holds ecological value, with unique flora and fauna. The area provides habitats for various wildlife species.
In essence, while the gorge’s ancient history is woven into the broader geological history of the region, its contemporary history is primarily defined by its role as an adventure tourism destination.
Back to the outing…
Zipline Activity

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff. We jumped into one of their trucks and were transported to the reception area. There, we were briefed on the activity and safety, fitted with the required gear, and back on the truck to be transported to the starting point.
The zip-line experience was a first for me, so I was anxious and unsure of what to expect. During the activity, we were to hook on and off 8 times between 4 zip-lines.
The first zip-line was 342 meters in length and went up to a speed of 70 km/h. It was an adrenaline rush for me. At the end of the first zip-line, I had these minor vibrations in my hands. It’s a lot like riding a motorcycle after a long while. You experience this adrenaline rush that makes your body vibrate slightly.

After the first one, 2 – 4 was a breeze. Talking of a breeze, the wind made it sketchy. Well, that was at least the case, with me only being able to hold on with one hand while holding onto the camera with the other.
We walked various short distances between the zip-lines.
The total length of the zip-line was 1,523 meters. The highest point of view is 75 meters, and the top speed is 121 km/h. The zip-line runs over the Mungini Gorge, and the views are awesome if you can keep your eyes open.
We were blessed with a lovely, open-sky day. This time of year, everything is so green, making it beautiful.

The fourth and final zip-line ends close to the reception area. From there, it’s a minor stroll to the reception area, where we took a few pictures, got the gear off, collected a friend who was catching up on some work while waiting for us, and then went to Cullinan itself.
Cullinan

In Cullinan, we explored a bit, took a few photos at the I Love Cullinan photo booth, and had lunch at the Railways Cafe.

We chose the Railways Cafe because we were familiar with the one in Pretoria, Centurion, so we knew what to expect. It seemed like a lot of the restaurants were on Oak Ave. If you are not up for the Railways Cafe, walk up Oak Ave to explore other options.
We did not have much time to explore Cullinan, but I will be back to learn more about the town and what it has to offer. I’m thinking of doing a mine tour. After all, the mine produced one of the biggest diamonds ever found.
On our way out via the R515, looking for some good-quality biltong, we thought it would be a good idea to make a pit stop at Kakiebos Vleis Market. I noticed them on the way in.
I must say, they did not disappoint. Friendly staff, clean toilets, and, best of all, quality kabenossi, droewors, and biltong. They also had other goodies on offer like cheese and koeksisters—you know, all those goodies only Farm Tannies know how to make well. Do yourself a favour and go and check them out when you are in the area.
Last Thoughts
My overall experience and those of my fellow adventurers were positive. The Zip-line activity was the highlight of the day.
Our brief visit to Cullinan was fun, full of photos, and with something to drink and eat. The few locals we met were friendly, helpful, and full of stories.
I can’t think of anything I disliked about our day spent in Cullinan. I, for one, will be back to explore the area more.
That’s it from me on the Adventure Zone Zip-line, Cullinan Review. I hope you have a better idea of what to expect and that it inspires you to go and check them out.
