When to Visit

Walking up Eastwood Street in Pretoria looking at the Jacaranda Trees in Bloom

In South Africa, jacaranda trees bloom from September to November, with October being the peak month for the most spectacular displays in Pretoria and Johannesburg. The exact timing varies slightly based on weather conditions, but mid-October typically offers the most vibrant purple canopies.

Why Start Early?

I joined the annual Jacaranda Tree Guided Walk organized by the Centurion Hiking Club at 7:00 AM, and here’s why this timing is perfect:

  • Cooler temperatures as we move into summer
  • Fewer crowds and traffic
  • Better lighting for photography
  • Peaceful ambiance to truly appreciate the subtle jacaranda fragrance

A Brief History

Walking up Eastwood Street towards Government Street among the Jacaranda Trees in Bloom in Pretoria

The story begins with Sir Percy FitzPatrick, a prominent figure in South African history, who first introduced these South American natives to Pretoria in the late 19th century. Captivated by their beauty, he recognized that Pretoria’s mild climate and fertile soil would provide ideal growing conditions. Today, his vision has created one of the world’s most spectacular urban displays of jacaranda trees.

This historic Anglican church, dating back to the early 1900s, makes for a worthwhile detour. Originally holding services in the Arcadia Schoolroom, the church was built in 1904 with final construction completed in 1962. It has served as a cornerstone of community life, offering not just worship but spiritual guidance and social connection.
