We hiked at the Taroko Trail Park. This trail park is situated in Modderfontein and forms part of hiking trails in the Johannesburg area. See Google Maps for directions. It’s a 35-minute drive from Centurion. At first, I was not sure. You drive through an industrial area to get there.
As I entered the park, I realised this was a rather fancy setup. It makes me think of Wolwespruit in Pretoria. It has a nice, big paved parking area with car guards. As I made my way to the reception area to meet fellow hikers and pay, I saw a Create ceramic painting, a restaurant, and a deli. It’s like the one at the Big Red Barn in Pretoria. It looks like it’s the same operation.

Onwards, I saw Trail Wolf Taroko, where you can get your mountain bike game on. They supply everything, from the bikes to the gear. In the same building, they have a coffee shop, which made for the perfect way to end our hike. There, you can get yourself a fancy coffee and something small to eat—think sandwiches, muffins, and cookies.

The Fourways Farmers Market operates from the same venue. You can stroll through the farmers’ market and find the usual variety of goods at such venues. The Farmers Market also offers a selection of alcoholic beverages and a wider variety of food.

We decided to hike the 11km trail. It’s easy without much elevation. See the infographic below for more in-depth details. The trail winds alongside a stream, through tree-covered areas, across bridges, past a picnic spot, a small waterfall, and a lake. The Gautrain also passes nearby.
The temperature was cool, and the air mostly smelled of dry grass and trees. We could hear lots of birds, but there were no other animals in sight. These trails are not pet-friendly. 🙁
My overall experience with Taroko Trail Park is positive. The venue looks great and offers a lot, and I can’t think of anything I dislike about it.

That’s all I have to say about the Taroko Trail Park Hike Review. May this inspire you to go for a hike at Taroko Trail Park.
