We visited the Donkey Dairy Farm to hike the Jack’s Trek Trail. Our group was small, and it made sense coming from Pretoria. It’s just before Rustenburg, an hour and a half drive. See the Google Map for directions. The last part towards the farm is a 2.5km dirt road.
There were moments when I was unsure if my vehicle was built for this road, and I thought I should turn around. Then, I saw a C-class Mercedes drive on the same dirt road and decided to push on. If a low-driving Merc can do it, so can I; onwards I went.
When I got to the farm, the friendly staff immediately greeted me. I was briefed on where to park, everything to do on the farm, and how to open a tab. While we waited for team members, I took the time to explore the farm. The farm had donkeys, goats, cows, alpacas, horses and chickens.
The Donkey Dairy Farm is a popular venue for kids’ parties. There was one on the day of our visit. I saw kids riding horses and donkeys, and others feeding the dwarf goats. It looked like they were having fun.
In addition, the farm has a kitchen where you can get something to eat and drink. They also have a curio shop where you can get all kinds of goodies, from memorabilia items like fridge magnets to soaps and creams made on the farm.
The Jack’s Trek Trail costs R40 pp to hike. The distance is 3km, and you are looking at an elevation of up—not sure precisely how high. I forgot to start my smartwatch on this one—too busy exploring the farm. I remember the second part of the climb becoming challenging, and I was blowing like a steam train. #maximumeffort #welovehills
The best part was getting to the top. The view from the top is always the reward for going up. We took a break at the top, taking in the view. We had something to eat and drink, and chatted on various topics.
After about 20 minutes of taking in the view, we decided to move on. The trail loops around the copy to where we exited the tree-covered areas. We entered and hiked back the same way we came, among the trees, to the farm. The trail goes quickly and up.
All in all, including the hike, I spent about three hours on the farm. It was a good way to spend a Saturday morning. The drive was scenic, coming from the Krugersdorp side.
The farm was an experience that made me think back to my childhood on the farm. This was a hike with good people, nature, and exercise, which is always a win in my books.
I can’t think of anything I disliked about the farm except the dirt road towards it. It’s all good. Don’t wash your car before planning a visit to the farm. 😉
