We are at the Hoogland Hiking Trail for a hike. This one was a first for me. I went with the Centurion Hiking Club, which was also my first.
I signed up for the club in September 2023 and only managed to join them for a hike in April 2024. Let’s just say work got priority, and nature had to wait.

The Hoogland Hiking Trail is situated at the Hoogland Health Hydro venue.
I decided to get an early start in case I got lost. Google Maps took me the long way around. Following Google Maps, you will find that the road takes you towards Laudium through the Erasmia suburb.

I drove onto a dirt road just past this suburb. This was not expected, but it was not a problem. I drove on this dirt road for a couple of kilometres when a sign directed me toward the Hoogland Health Hydro, where the trail is situated.
History
The Hoogland Hiking Trails are situated in the Schurveberg mountain range near Pretoria and not too far from Johannesburg. The 400-hectare conservation area provides over 30km of hiking trails that wind through bushveld, grassland, and unique dolomitic rock formations. Some of the trails include caves.
As you explore the trails, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and may encounter various wildlife, including game and birdlife. The trail is well-maintained and offers a peaceful and enjoyable hiking experience.
Hoogland Health Hydro is a renowned wellness retreat near the Hoogland Hiking Trail. Nestled in serene surroundings, this centre offers a comprehensive range of health and wellness programs.

The Start

Upon my arrival at the place where everyone gathered for the hike, I was surprised at the turnout. There were a lot of people in attendance.
It was awkward, as everything new is, but I made the best of it. I got my club card, greeted a few people, and started chatting with some. The hike started shortly after.
We had a guide from the Hoogland Health Hydro showing us the way.
Along The Trail

The hike started, and not long after, we started going up. The trail led towards a cave, which I was keen to see. It was an excellent addition to the hike.
As you hike through the trails, you may encounter various wildlife, including birds, small mammals, and possibly larger game like antelopes. The trails are a great place to observe and appreciate the natural habitat and its inhabitants.
During our hike, we saw many birds and encountered game. It was a hot morning, and the air smelled dry and dusty—it was wintertime, which was understandable.
My new fellow hikers were friendly and upbeat.
The trail goes past the spa through tricky climbs and loops back to the beginning. You need to be moderately fit for this one. Along the trail were a few challenging uphills and downhills with beautiful high points of view.
We hiked about 7 km plus or minus, and it took just under 3 hours to complete.

Last Thoughts
My overall experience of the hike was good. Good people, nature, and exercise are win-win for me. It’s an excellent way to spend a Sunday morning.
That’s it from me on the Hoogland Hiking Trail Review. This should give you a better idea of what to expect, and I hope it inspires you to visit them.
